The Union Budget for 2008-09 presented by the Finance Minister P Chidambaram has proposed setting up of 3 new Indian Institute of Technology centers.

One of them is allocated for Andhra Pradesh which is to come up in Medak. Currently there are 7 IITs in the country. The other new IITs are for Bihar and Rajastan.

The new proposed premier engineering institution in the State will start functioning from the next session in 2008-09.

Special package for rain hit farmers

In an effort to relieve the farmers affected by the adverse weather conditions, Andhra Pradesh government had announced a special package to the farmers hit by the recent heavy rains in the state.

A special allowance of Rs 4,500 per hectare has been announced to those suffering damages to paddy crops due to the excessive rains. Farmers with damaged pulses like Bengal gram, red gram will get a special assistance of Rs 3,750 per hectare.Other assistance amounts are (per hectare) for fully damaged maize: Rs 3,750, groundnut: Rs 4500, sunflower: Rs 3750, chillies: Rs 4500 and vegetables: Rs 4,500.

This was informed by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in the Assembly.

Road accidents kill 29 in the State

As many as 29 people were killed in three seperate road accidents in the State today.

In one tragic incident, atleast 10 people were killed as a truck carrying them fell into a valley near Dharakonda ghat road in Visakhapattanam. The victims were on their way to Orissa after attending a local festival at the inter state border.

Another road mishap took place in Alibad district of Andhra when a lorry collided with a jeep in Neredgonda mandal. Atleast 15 were killed in the incident.

In another road tragedy, four people were killed near Rammanagudem in Krishna district when an autorickshaw collided against a lorry.

Over rising indifferences within the party between Chief minister's supporters and Telangana leaders over the Telegana issue, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy has held a meeting with senior Congress leaders.

The Congress party has been on a dilemma on the sensitive issue and party high command is now pressurised to decide on the formation of a seperate state.

Congress leaders from the region were firm on their stance demanding the creation of Telangana State. The Friday's meeting at the residence of CWC member and senior MP G Venkataswamy was in an attempt to sort out he differences over the issue.

Budget well balanced: CM

Andhra Pradesh's Finance Minister K Rosaiah today tabled the state's annual budget for 2008-09. This year's budget which is also the last budget of the Congress government before the March 2009 election was presented amidst interruptions from the opposition.

No new taxes are presented in the budget which also focuses on infrastructure, rural development, agriculture and social welfare. There is a surplus of Rs 120 crore. The revival of the Rs 2 per kg rice scheme also has been announced.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has termed the budget as "growth-oriented and well-balanced". He also added that the total budget size which stood at Rs 1,00,436 crore was higher than the budgets of some of the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh.

Subsidy for Christian pilgrims

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an offer of subsidy to the Christain community for pilgrimage trips.

Similar to the subsidies offered to Haj pilgrims, the government would give out subsidies for Christians who want to visit holy land of Israel.

"My government has decided to extend the Haj pilgrim scheme to Christian minorities also for their religious visits to Christian Holy Lands in Israel." stated Governor N D Tiwari in his address to the Assembly and Council on the opening day of thr budget session.

There are about 1.2 million Christians in Andhra Pradesh which account to nearly 1.5% of Andhra's total population.

Rockwell Collins, laeading technology player in avionics industry is setting up a global engineering centre in Hyderabad.

Though the companty has many locations around the world this is the first of its kind in India. Apart from cost savings, India's high quality engineering talent is said to be the reason for the company's entry to India.

The engineering centre at Hyderabad, would be initially started with 20 professionals with engineering background and would later be expanded over the coming years. "In five years' time, we plan to increase the number to 500, and initially we will be focusing on displays development and flight management assistance products," said Rockwell Collins VP, Global Technology.

Center team to inquire on Anthrax scare

Amidst reports of Anthrax scare in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh a team of experts from the Union Health Ministry is expected to arrive in the State to probe into the matter.

Besides Andhra, there were Anthrax cases reported from Orissa. Andhra reported 5 people affected with the disease. Anthrax is a highly infectious disease and the cases reported are suspected to have transmitted from animals to humans through skin.

The infections have been reported in a sheep farm in Andhra where nearly 200 animals were down with the disease.

Nizamabad man can withstand 230 volt of electric current!

Nizamabad (Andhra Pradesh), Jan.30 (ANI): Believe it or not, a man in Nizamabad has developed immunity to electric current and can let it pass through his body that acts as a conductor when he lights any electric bulb.

An electrician by profession and a resident of Ramannapet in Morthad Mandal of Nizamabad in Andhra Pradesh, Bosa Kashiram leaves onlookers flabbergasted as he performs dare-devils holding naked electricity wires.

Bosaram, who is in his late 40s, claims to have mastered the art of bearing high voltage current 30 years ago.

"I am practicing this practice since 1976. However, it was only in 1980 that I tried touching livewire on barefoot, without slippers. It is very difficult work and one should not try it. If one comes in contact with current and one is not wearing chappals, it could be fatal," said Bosaram Kashiram.

Kashiram wants his name to be endorsed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having been able to let electricity pass through his body for over two decades.

He says: "I can bear 230 volts of current without wearing chappals (slippers) and let it pass through my hands. I have got the blessing from my mother, father and Goddess Sarawati to endure all these. That's how I have learnt this."

Local doctors are amazed at such a phenomenon. They believe that it requires something extraordinary developed inside a person's body to withstand waves of electric currents.

"Any human being who gets electric shock will be affected as current waves will leave an impact on the heart. It is really surprising to see that this man (Bosa Kashiram) is not affected even when he does not wear slippers. There must be inside his body," said Dr. Ashok, a doctor at Nizamabad.

Kashiram today cannot remain "Khush" (happy) without his daily dose of electricity shocks.(ANI)

Hindustan Construction bags 3.75 billion rupees order to construct country's first strategic oil storage

New Delhi, Jan 17 (ANI/Business Wire India): Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), a leading infrastructure construction and development company has bagged a contract worth 3.75 billion rupees from Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) to construct the country's first strategic crude oil storage at Vishakhapattanam.

This order is for construction of underground rock caverns for storage of crude oil. It includes, detailed engineering and design, underground excavation, access tunnels, water curtain galleries, main storage cavern, shafts and associated underground civil works including geological mapping. The project will be completed in 36 months.

This project is part of the three strategic crude oil storages with a total capacity of 5 million tons planned by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd, a subsidiary of Oil Industry Development Board. The first of these oil storages of 1.33 million tonnes capacity is planned in Vishakhapattanam.

With technical expertise in underground works in geologically complex terrain, HCC has built India's first major underground power house in the Himalayan region for the Yamuna Hydel Project in Uttar Pradesh in 1975.

HCC is also accredited with building the longest 11.3 km-long Head Race Tunnel (HRT) for Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectric power project. (ANI)

Telangana Rashtra Samithi threatens UPA of en mass resignation

Hyderabad, Jan 16 (ANI): The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has threatened the UPA Government of mass resignations of its public representatives in case the latter failed to initiate the process of creation of separate Telangana State by March 6.

TRS founder president and MP K Chandrasekar Rao said, "We want Prime Minister to officially announce the Congress party's stand on Telangana and also initiate the process for carving out the separate state."

TRS is a sub-regional party, which has four MPs, 10 MLAs and three MLCs. It had pulled out of the UPA government in September 2006.

"All the public representatives of the party would resign en masse on March 6 if the Centre failed to respond on the issue," he said. (ANI)

Six killed, 20 injured in Kanakadurga Temple stampede

Andhra Pradesh (Vijaywada), Jan 3 (ANI): At least six people were reportedly killed and 20 others were injured in a temple stampede at Vijayawada on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred when a large number of devotees thronged the Durga ghat near Kanakadurga Temple to perform prayers on the occasion of 'Bhavani Deeksha'.

According to police, devotees pushed each other to move ahead, which resulted in a stampede, in which five women and a child was killed.

The injured have been admitted to the local government hospital. The condition of one injured woman is stated to be serious.

Vijayawada MP L Rajgopal and MLA Devineni Rajasekhar met the injured in the hospital.

Blaming the temple authorities for the incident, State Endowment Minister J Ratnakar Rao has ordered a departmental inquiry.

The government has announced one lakh rupees ex-gratia payment for the kin of those killed and 10,000 for each of the injured. (ANI)

Abu Salem to appear before Hyderabad court in fake passport case

Hyderabad, Jan 3 (ANI): Underworld don Abu Salem will appear before a Hyderabad court today in connection with a fake passport case.

Salem, who was appeared before a special judge on December 20, was remanded to judicial custody till January 3.

As the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court judge was on leave, Salem was produced before another special judge to facilitate the speedy trial of a case involving embezzlement of scholarship grants from the Andhra Pradesh social welfare department.

The CBI had filed an application before the special judge, seeking his custody in the fake passport case.

Salem has been accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts as well as killing of Bollywood producer Gulshan Kumar, Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala's secretary, a builder and more than 50 other cases.

In March 2006, a special TADA court filed eight charges against him and his alleged associate Riaz Siddiqui for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Abu Salem is currently in high-security Arthur Jail in Mumbai. (ANI)

PM to inaugurate Indian Science Congress at the Andhra University

Visakhapatnam, Jan 3 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the 95th Indian Science Congress at the Andhra University here today.

The theme of the five-day event is ''Knowledge-Based Society Using Environmentally Sustainable Science and Technology''.

The Conference will be attended by around 700 distinguished delegates from abroad including 14 American students with over 8000 science delegates from within and across the globe.

They included Noble laureates Robert Curl Jr. of Houston, Roger D. Kornberg of Stanford University, California and Paul Nurse, who is president of the Rockfeller Foundation.

The Prime Minister will also present awards to distinguished scientists for their academic excellence.

Dr. Singh will present the presidential gold medal of the Indian Science Congress to a noted social scientist and Chairman of the Mekaster group Virender M. Trehan.

Trehan was responsible for introducing the digital switching system in India, which marked an important milestone in the Indian telecom industry.

This year, the event will have for the first time a national virtual Congress on 'Mahila Kisan'.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will provide tele-link to establish contact with farmers in a remote area of Adilabad, some desert areas of Rajasthan and other states for scientists to directly interact with women farmers.

The M.S. Swaminathan Foundation on video-conference mode will coordinate the programme and the ISRO is installing giant screens to telecast the proceedings.

Visakhapatnam, Jan.1 (ANI): The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam will set up a new environmental test centre soon.

This was disclosed by Dr. V. Bhujanga Rao, Director, NSTL.

The foundation stone for the centre will be laid at NSTL on January 2 by M Natarajan, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Ministeri and Director General, DRDO.

This centre will house several state of the art test facilities for carrying out stringent simulated environmental tests of various underwater weapons and naval products being developed at this Laboratory. The facility will be built with a plinth area of 7200 sq.mtrs. The test facilities range from mechanical to climatic and also combination of both.

These tests will ensure that developed products will meet total quality requirements and international defence standards. Some of the test facilities that are being set up are Vibration, Mechanical Shock, Bump, Drop, Low Temperature, High Temperature, Thermal Shock, Humidity, Mould growth, Salt spray, Dusting, EMI/EMC and Highly Accellerated Life Tests and Highly accelerated stress Screening.

The NSTL has been nurturing the technologies of shock, noise and vibration for years. Advanced facilities such as under water shock simulation tank, Vibration shakers and acoustic test centers have already been set up. Several weapons, related systems and warship technology products have been handed over to Indian Navy in the recent past.

For such developments, environmental testing plays a vital role. NSTL performed several shock, vibration and temperature tests with limited facilities that were set up. However, as the technology is advancing rapidly, to match the stringent quality requirements, setting up different types of more advanced, and high rated environmental test facilities has become a necessity.

The test facilities are also useful for various indigenous industries developing products for defence. By setting up these test facilities, NSTL will be in a position to evaluate weapons and products under development in simulated marine environmental conditions as well as onboard dynamic conditions. The products thus developed would function even in adverse conditions while delivering optimum performance.

Once these facilities become operational and the Products are evaluated at NSTL, our Weapon Systems, Warship Technology Products will be on par with any international standards. (ANI)

13 killed in Andhra road accident

Hyderabad, Dec 29 (ANI): As many as 13 people were killed and seven others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a lorry in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore District on Saturday.

Members of a marriage party were travelling in a sports utility vehicle to Buchireddypalem in Nellore District from Jammaladarga at Nandyal in Kurnool District when their vehicle collided with the lorry at Marripadu village, police said.

All the 13 deceased, including six women and three children, belonged to the same family. While 12 died on the spot, one person succumbed to his injuries.

Congress leader Janardhan Reddy passes away

Hyderabad, Dec 28 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Assembly Congress Legislator P Janardhan Reddy, died of cardiac arrest here today.

Reddy, 59, was a legislator from Hyderabad's Khairatabad constituency.

He suffered severe heart attack when he arrived at a party meeting in Secunderabad. He was rushed to a super-speciality hospital, where he breathed his last.

He has been elected to the State Assembly in 1978, 1985, 1989, 1994 and 2004.

Reddy served as the Minister for Labour in the earlier Congress Government (1989-94) in the state. (ANI)

US university shootout victim's body reaches India

Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), Dec 24 (ANI): The body of one of the two Indian students, killed in an apartment on the Louisiana State University campus, was brought to his native Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

Relatives of Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma blamed the Central and Andhra Pradesh Governments for not doing enough to put pressure on the American authorities to book the culprits.

"The Central or the State Governments, what action have they taken? Till today, they have not announced anything. What happened to the culprits, what incident had taken place at that place?," said Reddy's brother-in-law Srinivasan.

Early investigations have indicated that the deaths came about due to home invasion.

Foreign exchange Ph.D students Reddy and Kiran Kumar Allam were found shot dead on December 13 at the Edward Gay apartments near the LSU band practice field.

The shooting occurred at the Edward Gay apartments near the Louisiana State University band practice field and Governor-elect Bobby Jindal's transition office. (ANI)

Junior doctors call off strike

Hyderabad, Dec 20(ANI): Junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh have called off their strike after the State Government by imposed Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

The doctors went on strike after some of them were attacked by relatives of a patient and activists of the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) which is led by MLA Afsar Khan,on December 2.

Senior doctors had resumed work after the government brought out an ordinance that addressed their demand for security in hospitals. Their junior colleagues,however, continued the protest.

Earlier, a Division Bench of the High Court comprising acting Chief Justice Bilal Nazki and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan recorded an undertaking given by the junior doctors that they were calling off their 12-day-old strike and posted the case for adjudication to a later date.

The boycott of emergency services by junior doctors at Niloufer and Osmania General Hospitals and elective duties at other Government hospitals had paralysed medical services in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. (ANI)

Hyderabad,Dec 20,(ANI):Underworld don Abu Salem was remanded to judicial custody till January 3 by a Hyderabad court today in connection with a fake passport case.
Salem, who was brought to Hyderabad from Mumbai on a prisoner transit warrant, was produced before a special judge, who sent him to 14 days judicial custody.

As the special CBI court judge was on leave,Salem was produced before another special judge to facilitate the speedy trial of a case involving embezzlement of scholarship grantsfrom the Andhra Pradesh social welfare department.

Salem was presented before the court at Nampally amidst tight security.

The CBI had filed an application before the special judge, seeking his custody in the fake passport case.Salem, who is also wanted in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, was then taken to Mumbai,where he is facing trial in a TADA court.(ANI)
