Was the stranger a suicide bomber? Thursday, October 13, 2005 | Pavan
Was the explosion inside the Police Commissioner's Task Force office an act of suicide bomber? This was the most widely debated question among police officials even as confusion prevailed over the motive behind the attack on the office. Based on eyewitness accounts, the police initially believed that a stranger carrying a backpack had walked into the office and managed to escape after throwing the bomb either on the home guard or into the building. But an hour after the explosion, sleuths found the severed head of a man near the bathroom in Additional DCP K.V. Venkat Reddy's room. "Generally, the home guard stops strangers at the entrance of the hall. We cannot figure out as to how the man carrying a bag managed to go inside the Additional DCP's room," a police officer wondered. If the stranger was a suicide bomber, why would he target the building when no official was available was another question. The police are probing the possibility of the explosives accidentally going off. "But the fact that his body was blown off into pieces and only head remaining intact raises several doubts," a senior officer observed. While speculation is rife about the possible involvement of a suicide bomber, confusion prevails about the persons who masterminded the explosion. The police did not rule out involvement of religious fundamentalist organisations behind the explosion.
Police yet to confirm suicide bombing theory Thursday, October 13, 2005 | Pavan
* Constable on sentry duty injured; explosion occurs very near to Chief Minister's official residence * Experts suspect it to be a high explosive, police officers busy piecing together shreds of information * Home guard Satyanarayana's torso rips off under the blast impact; glass panes of nearby shops break * Constable confirms `stranger' carrying a backpack theory * Utter confusion prevails at the blast site for over an hour; panic grips the locality A constable on sentry duty was injured in the mysterious explosion that occurred at a stone's throw away from Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's official residence. The police suspect that the civilian victim could have brought the explosive to the office of the Task Force, which investigates complicated criminal cases reported in the twin cities. Though the theory of suicide bombing is doing rounds, no police official has confirmed this angle. The blowing of the trunk of the civilian leaving only his head intact led to speculation about the suicide bombing. Going by the blast impact, explosives' experts suspect that it was high explosive, possibly gelatine. However, the method of detonation is yet to be ascertained. Home guard A. Satyanarayana (45) apparently took full impact of the blast and had his torso ripped off. Sentry Venkat Rao sustained minor shrapnel injuries and is in a state of shock.

Wish you Happy Dussehra Tuesday, October 11, 2005 | Pavan
Why Dussehra ? This is one question that arises and there doesn’t seem to be a consensus on the legend behind it. However, the main legend as for the residents of Andhra Pradesh goes is the Victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. The other two being, one related to Ramayana and the other to Mahabharatha. Legend says that Mahishasura, the demon king has been troubling the world with his cruel acts. The demon was invincible because he was blessed with the boon of immortality by Lord Shiva after a severe penance. The demon however, out of a superiority complex happens to avoid the women from the list of his enemies who are likely to hurt him. This being the only way out the Gods of the heavens pray to Adi Shakthi for rescue. She then drawing the powers from all the supreme Gods fights a fierce battle with Mahishasura for nine days in nine different forms ( called Nava Durgas ). After the fierce battle for the nine days, Goddess Durga realises that the demon also had the capability to take a rebirth from each drop of his blood that falls on the ground. So, the Goddess kills him with her trishul by keeping the body on the tongue of Sri Kalika Devi. This victory is celebrated on the tenth day as Vijayadasami. Another legend says that the Great Demon King Ravana was killed by Lord Rama after a long fierce battle on the Vijayadasami Day and thus the festival.Yet another widely held legend is that Pandavas in Mahabharatha after the fourteen years of their Aranyavasa have resumed their weapons from atop the Jammi tree, where they have left them earlier. Thus is the festivity of Dasara. It is also believed that the bundle of weapons appeared like a hanging corpse to the strangers and was guarded by a snake. Dussehra is celebrated with aplomb in almost all the pilgrimages of the Goddess. But, Dussehra at Vijayawada is one of memorable experience when the presiding deity Kanaka Durga wears a festive look and people go in procession and offer prayers.

Institutional deliveries increases in Andhra Pradesh Wednesday, October 5, 2005 | Pavan
Though institutional deliveries have increased in the State in the last two years, the maternal mortality rate continues to be high. Maternal mortality rate is the number of deaths of mothers per one lakh births. Andhra Pradesh has an MMR of 154. This is pretty high when measured by World Health Organisation and National Health Policy standards. The WHO has asked States to reduce the rate to 100 maternal deaths for every one lakh births. Health experts of the State used to say that the low percentage of institutionalised deliveries was a major reason for high MMR. However, this does not seem valid. Noted paediatrician Dr N.C.K. Reddy told this correspondent that the non-availability of essential drugs, the lack of expert advice and the lack of trained midwives were also some of the reasons for the death of mothers. Sometimes, mothers do not even bother to approach us before the delivery, he said. Awareness is very important.
