Music Director Devisriprasad Saturday, July 30, 2005 | Pavan
Devi Sri Prasad won the recent filmfare award for his music in Varsham film. On this eve Devi Sri Prasad met with press for chitchat. Here are the excerpts - > Who are you indebted to for your success in films? MS Raju is the man who recognized the talent in me and gave the chance of music direction for Devi film. I was 17 years old then. He helped me realizing my dream of becoming music director. The next highlight in my career came in form of Varsham, which was also produced by MS Raju. I got tremendous appreciation for different tunes given to MS Raju's NVNV. I am working for MS Raju's Pournami now. > There are no musical hits from you after NVNV. What is the reason? Unfortunately the film has to be good for music to get popular. I gave extraordinary work for Sontham film. But the film was bombed and all the efforts put for music has gone in vain. Arya's music is great and the film is also great. Hence music helped film to increase it's commercial range. Making film is a team work and the end-result would depend on how good audiences receive the film. > We are not talking about box office fate of the films. We are asking about the quality of music that has gone down after NVNV? What about Andarivadu music. It was not received too well? There should be right situations for music to blend in the film. There are no situations for any of the songs in Andarivadu and hence they did not blend in. I feel that the songs should become integral part of narration. It worked for NVNV. After that I did not get the sort of films that has blending-in-songs. > Penning lyrics by music directors is bit strange. How did you manage it? Whenever I compose a tune, I start with some words which are relevant to the situation. And all my songs would start with the words I composed irrespective of who the lyricist is. Let me explain how 'Chaila Chaila' song happened in Shankar Dada MBBS. This song is about hero singing a song on love and narrating it as flashback in hospital backdrop. Hence I decided to mix medical related terms with flowery language. If you listen to lyrics, you get words like Gulabi (love), pulse rate (medical), heartbeat (medical) etc. When I composed tune with my own words, Chiranjeevi liked it instantly. He asked me to pen the lyrics. And Jayant also insisted on it. I also added some message in the song as that message would carry lots of weight if Chiranjeevi gives it. I wrote words like 'Odopovatam tappukadura, chachipovadam tappu sodara'. Chiranjeevi did lots of improvisation to the lyrics. He is the one who added 'ammailanu champatam neram' (referring to Vijayawada Srilakshmi's gruesome murder). > Chiranjeevi suggested you in the 100 days function of Bunny that you should decrease number of commitments so as to give more qualitative output. What is your reaction? Yes. I am currently being very selective. At present, I am doing only Pournami film. There was a mix up in this year, as NVNV and Naa Alludu which were supposed to be released in September and November respectively got postponed to January. With new commitments in January, things got mixed up. Whenever I commit a film I ask the producer about the release date so that I could plan backward, as I had to start rerecording a month before release. When the release dates change, my work and schedules get upset. Hence there was a few days delay from me in providing songs to films. The quality of the songs would also depend on how much liberty the producer gives to me. MS Raju gives lots of liberty. He never puts pressure on me. > You seem to be doing music for only big films. Don't you consider small films? Oka Oorilo was a small film. In fact I was hospitalized due to fatigue a month back. I got the instruments set up in Hospital to score background music of Oka Oorilo film. > Who is your inspiration to become music director? I am obsessed with the music of Ilayaraja since I was kid. I think all the music directors who entered industry after Ilayaraja are fans of him. Ilayaraja gave new dimension to rerecording in our films. With his exceptionally good rerecording, he popularized that process. > You seem to be having a limited group of singers in your songs. Aren't those voices becoming monotonous as your film count increases? Yes. I feel comfortable with them and they are like my friends. They work during any odd time. But I would like to introduce new singers. I am looking forward for new talents and I will make sure that my next album Pournami will have lots of freshness in terms of voices. In fact, I introduced Malathi in Telugu and see how popular she is now. I give more preference to hard work than talent. Talent is something inborn. You need to be just lucky to be born talented. But working hard is something which you develop on your own. > How do you manage to excel in singing, dancing, lyrics, music direction and stage performance? When I am performing on stage, I feel that I am Michael Jackson. When I am scoring music, I feel that I am Ilayaraja. When you assume the position of the best in that field, you would get amazing confidence. > What parameters do you take in consideration while scoring music for a film? First I look at the six situations I am supposed score songs for. I understand the characterizations of hero and heroine. I also look for locations of the songs and continuity of the locations of the songs with respect to the lead scenes and the scenes that follow later. > How are you doing in Tamil film industry? I scored for a couple of films called Mayavi and Sachin. The music topped the charts. But unfortunately the results of movies are not encouraging enough. I am doing the remake of Varsham and I plan to use almost all the original tunes in Tamil version as well. > How important is orchestration in scoring music? If the tune is heart of the song, I feel that orchestration is the body that compasses all the parts. Orchestration is one thing that differentiates one music director from another. Most of the music directors tend to ignore this part. I feel Ilayaraja is the best when it come to orchestration. > Are you planning any pop album? I did the pop album Mr. Devi before entering films. It was very hard as a teenager for me to promote that album. I waited at the gates of Gemini TV office for 3 months to meet the right guy. But could not get any contact. Fortunately my father Satyanand is a writer in films and Allu Arvind is our family friend. We got Pawan Kalyan to release the audio album of Mr. Devi. I was fortunate to have such contacts. But there are many youngsters in AP today who want to sing do not get opportunities. Not everybody can enter film's playback singing. Pop album is an alternative option. But the pop culture here is not developed. Smita has made a difference with her albums by promoting pop culture. But there it needs to be exploited lot further. I am planning to do a pop album very soon. If pop culture catches up with the youth, there would be lots of opportunities for youngsters who want to become singers to do pop albums. > What's your take on remix albums? I like remix albums. But I do not want to do them. I might do a remix album of my own popular songs. I already scored remix of Nuvvostanante from Varsham.

The festival of lust goes on.. Friday, July 29, 2005 | Pavan
Name: Subhadra Age: 14 Years D/o: Padma Place:Peddapuram It is an important day in the life of fourteen year old Subhadra, daughter of Padma a hereditary sex worker of Peddapuram. Her mother gave her an oil bath, silk clothes and a glass of milk with almonds for the starters in the morning. The teenager was happily dancing around the house with little knowledge of what was waiting for her in the night. > Several rich and famous persons visited the house no.14 on the banks of Godavari river about 389 kms from Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. All of them were scrutinizing Subhadra and assessing her worth in bed. They had come in search of virgin girl to become their bedmate for the first night of month of Aashada-spring season. The belief that mating a virgin brought them weath: powerful business and political leaders of the region to this town to take the first pick of the season's lot. Throughout the day, Subhadra was shown around to hundreds of bidders. While her protectors put her valuation benchmark of Rs.18,000 by the end of the day the bidding concluded at Rs.51,000 for the rights over her for the day. > The bidder was a 38 year old gold merchant who will be entertained as a son-in-law of the family until he chose to leave. He also got the privilege to call on the house of ill fame whenever he wanted and was assured of priority over others. Subhadra is one of the 20 odd girls who were auctioned for the Ashada Mela a festival of lust a 34 day event that began last Sunday, July 24th in the coastal district of East Godavari. Peddapuram is a mucipal town in the rice bowl of the state known for its heritary and cultural leanings towards prostitution as a way of life. As part of the festival men walk into the arms of the scatily dressed women for a long dose of sex. Before doing so the Men folk offer prayers and worship a local deity-Maridamma for peace, happiness, wealth and health. > "Most of all we also pray for a good lay in the season" said Lakshman Rao a 42 year old tobacco farmer from Ravulapalem. Since time immemorial, the Peddapuram town, which is hardly 30 kms from the seacoast. Almost every second house in the ten sq.kms spread town is a brothel with a minimum of 20 to 30 girls owned by a resourceful and imaginative manager. > A minimum of four lakh fancy condoms are sold in this town during this festival as against an average ten lakh condoms sold during the entire year. Incidentally the industry nets an average of Rs. two crore business per month. > Businesspersons who cannot afford to spend in Peddapuram hire villages in the district for their weekedn soliciting along with friends and relatives. Though the practice has been despised by several reform minded administrators and police officials, the Aashada Mela continued and was patronized unabated.District officials said that efforts made during last few years have helped reduce the number of visitors to Peddapuram. "It is not possible to clean a century old cultural format. It has changed a lot. It will end soon" says the police superitendent.

Average: ** Cast: Nagarjuna, Ayesha Takia, Anushka, Sonu Sood, Ali, Shyaji Shinde, Sunil, Piyush Mishra, Shabir and others. > Nagarjuna with his fondness for taking the path less trodden has tried to make this film look so cool and offer mindblowing action sequences but director and script writer Puri Jagannath has not enough material to make the film engrossing. The entire first half is so boring. Add to it, the songs appear at every drop of a hat. It starts off with a similar fashion of Hindi click, "Dhoom", but it treads differently. It has altogether different story from that film. The film is about two friends and how they become rivals when a misunderstanding creeps in. Akhil (Nagarjuna) runs a taxi shed. He falls in love with a doctor Siri Valli (Ayesha Takia). When her father is killed in an accident, she moves to her foster brother Sonu's (Sonu Sood) home. But Sonu and Akhil hate each other. Here comes a flash back. Sonu, his sister Sasha (Anushka) and Akhil are good friends. They turn to robbery when the life goes tough. Sasha is in deep love with Akhil but he refuses to accept her love, saying he treats her just a friend. She threatens tht if he doesn't accept, she would end her life. One day she is killed. Sonu thinks that she is killed herself because of Akhil. So he hates him. It is later revealed that Sasha is actually killed by a gang. The rest of the film is how the friends take revenge on the gang. Ngaarjuna looks cool with his long-grown hairstyle. But he hs not done any amazing risks or stunts. Sonu Sood has done a fantstic job. He does all the actin sequences actually.

Kanchanamala Cable TV Tuesday, July 19, 2005 | Pavan
Below Average ** New director Parthasarathy has tried to make a film in the lines of VAmsy's old films and the recent ones Kabaddi Kabaddi, Pandem etc. But his debut offering Kanchanamala Cable TV C/o Juvvala Palem lacks that "freshness". The film evokes some laughs here and there but on the whole, you get the feeling of deja vu right through the film. Very old way of narration lacking with jokes, the film drags on to the unbearable lengths in the second half. The first half whizzes fast with its humor laced situations. One of the major problem with the film is predictibility. > The story is very simple. Sudarshanam (Srikanth) runs a cable TV in a village Juvvalapalem. He names the cable TV after his maradalu Kanchanamala who has been missing since she was a kid. His aunt (Annapoorna) and uncle (Satyanarayana) still wait for her. Seeing his sister's (Annapoorna's) ailing conditin, criminal Lawyer (Tanikella) asks his client Sirisha (Laxmi Roy) to act as Kanchanamala for a few days so that his sister becomes normal, Sirisha who has threat from a guy readily accepts this fofer so that the lawyer would arrange everything for her US Visa. She comes as Kanchanamala to Juvvalapalem. What happens next is the rest of the story. Srikanth as usual has done good job. Heroine Laxmi Roy has neither looks nor brains (performancE). She is a miscast in her role. Though she has no inhibitions in exposing her body on the screen (thre is a lot of skin show in songs, actually) she lacks the quality of presenting it right way. A film by Aravind Thursday, July 14, 2005 | Pavan
Above average *** Aravind (Rajiv Kanakala) and Rishi (Rishi) are childhood buddies. They struggled together to come up in life and settle as director and hero respectively. They delivered two consecutive hits together and are in search of a script for a 3rd film. Of the scripts sent by various story writers, Aravind finds on script to be interesting. But that script was smudged with ink after 60th page (25th scene). He summons his assistant scout for the writer and takes Rishi for story discussions on that script to his remote wooden guesthouse located few kilometers away from the city. The scenes mentioned in the script come alive. As the things get scary, Aravind wants to see what would happen in the next scene and realize that the rest of the script is smudged by ink. The rest of the story is all about what happens next. Rajiv Kanakala is excellent in the role of Aravind. His histrionics are natural Rishi is competent for his character. Mona Chopra is OK. Ghazal Srinivas did a pivotal character in this film. His dialogue delivered added the necessary mystery to his character. Madhu did well as the role of Housekeeper. Mallikharjuna Rao is adequate. > Story-screenplay-direction: The basic story plot of the film is interesting. But the point in climax is unappealing. Sekhar Suri definitely had the necessary spark in him as the director. The way he narrated the first half without much story shows his grip on screenplay. However, he could not sustain the interest in second half. The case scenes, mystic killings in the first half are dealt with dexterity. > However the following points were not convincing enough. 1.The misunderstandings creeping in between Aravind and Rishi (more because they are close buddies from the childhood) 2.The connection between the story in the script and the mysterious lady killer is not established. 3.Though the appearance of the writer in the interval looked interesting, he played passive role in second half. If the scenes in the scripts are coming alive, then why can’t he tell what would happen later so that they could avoid being happened. 4.Heroine would be passive (in stead of explaining) even when people try to kill her during the climax. > Other departments: Cinematographer Ramesh Krishna has done a very good work. The sequences in the first half are terrific. He used natural night light for the entire second half. Music by Vijay Kurakula is good. He had a beautifully choreographed second in first half. Art work of the film is also good. Production values of the film are appropriate. Debutant producer Sridhar Rao should be commended for choosing different genre of film in stead of going for routine formula film. > Analysis: First half of the film is interesting. The second half is bit boring. The plus points of the film are director’s taking in the first half and photography. The minus point of the film is climax. This film runs for almost 2 and half hours. It is difficult to narrate a horror story for 2 and half hours. Director should have made the film for less duration. You may watch this film for its first half. > Cast: Rajiv Kankala, Rishi, Mona Chopra, Ghazal Srinivas, Mallikarjuna Rao, Sara & Madhu (USA)

Nireekshana Thursday, July 7, 2005 | Pavan
Anu (Sridevi), a rich businessman's (Nagababu) daughter, is highly sensitive. In practical joke, a jealous classmate of hers Monika sends wrong message to her father that she is about to elope with a boyfriend. Her father takes it seriously and locks her in a remote farmhouse situated amidst a forest. Meanwhile Ravindra (Aryan Rajesh), a good for nothing guy, lands in that farmhouse to escape from police. After a futile kidnap drama and silly moral classes taken by Anu, our hero becomes good man and unites the daughter and father in the end. In every scene you get a feeling of deja vu. Uninspiring screenplay laced with a joke-scene, song -sentiment format, Nireekshana looks a forced love story. Actually Aryan Rajesh's character is very villainous till the end of the climax and there is no love between the lead characters but it has been treated as a love story. Out of the blue dream songs appear, for every 5 minutes a vulgar joke sequence goes on. Srilekha, the master of lifting songs, delivers lifting music, carefully lifting hit tunes from Tamil films. Sarath's cinematography, particularly picturisation of songs, is fantastic. On the whole, avoidable film. Starcast: Aryan Rajesh, Sridevi, Rajesh, Nagababu, Jyothi, Chandramohan, Surya, Ali etc., Music: Srilekha, Producer: Ramanaidu, Direction: V.Seetharam.
Oka Oorilo Thursday, July 7, 2005 | Pavan
A thin story line studded with good cinematograhy, suitable performances, and nothing much. Ravi (Raja), Lalitha (Saloni), and Seenu (Tarun) are good friends since childhood in their village, Ravi moves off to Hyderabad with his parents and thus the friends part. Seenu and Lalitha stay good friends and soon, when the time comes, they fall in love naturally. Seenu's father does not like this, and they run away from home. The friends reunite in Hyderabad quite unexpectedly. What happens next forms the second half of the move. There's not much of a story; the narration is thus slow at places Screenplay is better comparatively, but what good is it if the story does not have much weight in it? The director's idea is good, but there's some lacuna in translating the idea into a move of this sort. A part of the diector's job was also to see that both the heroes have enough acting to do and enough scenes to satisfy themselves and their fans. That part is handled with ease: both heroes get good importance, though Raja is not really a hero according to the story, Most artistes were not required for the story of the movie. Inclusion of such roles could have diluted the story line and the feel of the move. There are some touching scenes in the movie, but the director already lost the audiene from his grip by the time such scens came up. Starcast: Tarun, Saloni, Raja, Archana, Master Bharat, Master Teja, Baby Nikshita, Sunil, Chandramohan, Ramaraju, Yamuna, Naresh, Kalpana, Nirosha Murali, Hema, Brahmanandam etc,.
