Fishermen in flood-hit Vijayawada blame Govt for their woes Wednesday, June 27, 2007 | MP
Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), June 26 (ANI): Fishermen in flood-hit Vijayawada on Tuesday blamed Government apathy for their woes even as floodwaters were receding, leaving them with tattered nets and damaged boats.
As many as 300 fishing families in Vijayawada bore the brunt of the floods.
The fishermen complained that the State Government was doing nothing to bail them out.
"The floods usually come at night, since our nets are spread out during that time, they all get damaged. Many of our small boats have also been severely damaged in these floods,” said Lakshmaih, a fisherman.
They alleged that government officials visit the area pretending to share their trouble but go away and do nothing.
Andhra Pradesh has been reeling under heavy rains for the past several days.
The worst affected is the Kurnool District where more than 50 people have died and 200,000 people are homeless.
Authorities say they have already distributed half a million food packets and a million water sachets to people in 300 relief centers.
About 5,000 medical teams are touring the affected areas to prevent outbreak of major diseases as the flood water receded. (ANI)
EVV and Collection King on same path Wednesday, June 20, 2007 | PV
Hero Mohan Babu and Director EVV have one thing in common. They need to promote two successors, as the two are blessed with two sons each. They have met with the same fate too. While one son is surging ahead, one is lagging behind. One son of EVV, Allari Naresh has registered recent success with Attili Satti babu, while another son, Aryan Rajesh is yet to gain ground in the industry. EVV has got ready an action oriented story for Rajesh. As Rajesh is mild natured, it has become difficult for his father to find suitable story for him. He will succeed this time, EVV confidently says. Same is the case with Mohan babu. One son could make his mark with the film Dhee, while another one is yet to succeed.
Rajni arranged Sivaji preview for Chandrababu Friday, June 15, 2007 | PV
Film star Rajnikanth has arranged a special preview of his film Shivaji for former chief minister and Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu at Prasad Labs. Babu not only watched the film patiently but appreciated every action of the super star. Incidentally, chief minister YS Rajsekhar Reddy was not invited for this preview since it was special and meant exclusively for Chandrababu Naidu. Immediately after the show, Babu interacted with mediapersons and felt that Rajnikanth should join active politics. The Rajnikanth-Babu meeting gains significance as the TD leader has now joined the AIADMK leader J Jayalalitaa's camp (read Third Front). Incidentally, Rajnikanth gave tacit support to Jayalalitaa in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. NTR Bhavan sources point out that Babu's meeting with Rajnikanth and watching the Telugu film Shivaji is a strategic move. Babu is desperate out of power and he wants to gain power at any cost. He feels that praising Rajnikanth and siding with him will bring a few more votes to the Telugu Desam.
CMFRI launches caged fish breeding technique Friday, June 15, 2007 | PV
Vishakhapatnam, June 12 (ANI): Vishakhapatnam-based Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) today launched a new age fish breeding technique involving culture of fish in cages.
The project has been undertaken under the aegis of Union Ministry of Agriculture.
It is a technique of breeding fish in containers enclosed from all sides and bottom by a material that holds fish inside while permitting water exchange and waste removal into the surrounding water.
Cages are constructed in a variety of shapes using materials such as bamboo or wooden slats and wire, nylon and other synthetic meshes. Support structures can hold cages on the water surface or suspended above the bottom of a body of water.
"The entire cost of the project is around 6.5 lakhs. It is expected to yield minimum five tonnes of fish and will fetch about eight to ten lakh rupees in the first crop itself. We expect it to be very economical and very competitive, better then fishing," said G. Syda Rao, Scientist-in-charge at CMFRI.
Rao said that the technique used in India is different from the one used in other countries as Indian seas are choppy.
"The cage is very stable and of high density. You can culture huge quantity of fish. This is anchored once in a year with the help of anchors and weights. It is very-very stable. It is about 250-300 meters from shore at a depth of 10 meters just behind breakers zone, and it is very safe," Rao added.
After the success of the cage fish culture, the Ministry of Agriculture is planning to replicate it in other States as well.
The technique, already quite popular in several countries is a recent entrant to India. It is supposed to have great potential, as it will raise fish production considerably.
This technique is eco-friendly, non-destructive and will prove to be beneficial in coastal areas, where local Governments ban fishing at certain period of the year. (ANI)

BJP criticises Andhra govt’s decision to give reservation to minorities Tuesday, June 12, 2007 | AA
New Delhi, June 11 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today criticised the decision of the Andhra Pradesh Government to issue an ordinance to provide reservations to the Muslims on religious basis.
BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the decision goes against the spirit of the Constitution and concept of the secularism.
“It is a divisive vote-bank politics with no intention for minority’s welfare. The BJP would welcome steps to end deprivation and accord empowerment of all disadvantaged groups without any discrimination. This comes days after Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that his government would promulgate an ordinance effecting Muslim reservations within a month.
"Within a month Insha Allah, we should be in a position to overcome all the hurdles," Reddy said. (ANI)

Rajni's Sivaji Nizam area right costs Rs.7.5 crores Tuesday, June 12, 2007 | PV
Tamil superstar Rajnikant has taken the fight right into the camp of the Telugu film industry which is firmly opposed to dubbed movies. According to industry sources, the rights for Rajnis much-hyped Sivaji in the Nizam territory went for a whopping Rs 7.5 crore. Sivaji may also hit hard Telugu movies currently running at theatres. Movie pundits aver that Rajnis presence may reduces audiences in Telugu films such as the Srikanth-starrer Operation Duryodhana, Ravi Tejas Dubai Seenu, Venkatesh’s Adavari Maatalaku Arthaleverule and Prabhas-starrer Munna and Aata. Apart from the fact that Rajnikant stars in the movie, there is a lot of craze for director Shankars films in Andhra Pradesh. It made business sense for us to buy the Nizam territory rights for the film, said P Rammohan Rao, COO, Pyramid Saimira Theatre Limited, Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad, June 10 (ANI): An IT firm here today launched a broadband service claiming that it will be free from any kind of porn websites.
The company has developed software, Optima N-10, that would filter pornographic material and sites from the Internet.
Optima N-10, which can police net content on 200 Internet-enabled computers, took two-and-a-half years in the making.
"It is the world's first statistical pornographical filter. No other product has ever been able to achieve such sort of process and such level of accuracy that we have achieved so far. We also announce the launching of world's first porn-filtered broadcast service, it will be completely porn-free broadcast experience," said Anil Chandra K, Manager, Drishti systems Pvt Ltd, the private firm that claims to develop the software.

Swallowing live-fish for asthama cure Saturday, June 9, 2007 | AA
Hyderabad, June 9 (ANI): A large number of people have gathered here to swallow medicine stuffed inside a live fish - a treatment believed to cure asthma and other respiratory ailments.
Eager patients have lined up for the medicine - a herbal formula placed inside a small fish and thrust into their mouths. Hyderabad's Bathini family has been performing the ritual for generations.
Patients have to buy a two-inch-long ‘Murrel’ fish, and swallow it live after Bathinis stuff their secret herbal mixture inside its mouth.
The fish helps clear the patient's oesophagus as it makes its way down to the stomach, and later releases the medicine. It survives for about 15 minutes inside the body, reportedly helping to clear phlegm in the lungs as it flaps about.
Tasbir Singh, a patient from New Delhi, said since he started the treatment he has noticed a major improvement.
"I have been coming regularly for three years and this is my third year. Previously, it was very bad but now it is better. Last year, there was a lot of improvement and this year there is even more. The therapist says I will be completely healed this time," Singh said.
The medicine comes free, but patients have to buy the fish, which is locally called ‘Murrel’.
The Bathinis say a saint gave the wonder cure in 1845 to Bathini Veeranna Gowd, a farmer, and asked him to treat all who came to him free of cost.
B. Harinath Bathinis, who administers the treatment to patients, said that they have now been carrying on the treatment for years and since then the number of patients visiting them has grown manifold.
"About 25 people know this formula. We have all been regularly practising fish therapy for the last 162 years. Earlier, just ten people came for this therapy. But when we came to the city in 1998, we got lakhs of people coming to us for this treatment," he said.
The medicine is distributed to patients during the auspicious Mrigasira solar phase, an astrological phenomenon that occurs once a year for two days.
Complete treatment requires an annual dosage for three years. (ANI)
