HRC conducted inquiry on Nilofer deaths
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 | Pavan

These are not good times for Niloufer hospital. After the State Human Rights Commission conducted an inquiry into the frequent deaths of newborn kids in the hospital, it is the turn of the National Human Rights Commission. NHRC officials have been visiting Niloufer hospital in the last two days to find out the reasons for the recurrent deaths of infants. They visited Niloufer since they were not satisfied with the explanation proffered by the hospital superintendent. It is a known fact that Niloufer hospital has highest infant mortality rate among maternity hospitals of the city. It has an IMR of about 60 deaths for every 1,000 births while similar institutions such as Nayapul and Koti maternity hospitals usually record an IMR of 45. BPL power purchase agreement revived
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 | Pavan

The State government is all set to revive the controversial 520 MW coal-fired power plant of BPL Ltd, with the company offering to bring down the tariff by nine paise. According to sources, representatives of the BPL Ltd, who had detailed discussions with the experts committee, headed by Finance Minister K. Rosaiah recently, agreed to reduce the power supply tariff from Rs 1.88 paise per unit to Rs 1.79. If operated at the 85 per cent plant load factor, the reduction in tariff works out to around Rs 36 crore, sources said.
The Rosaiah committee referred the BPL’s offer to a technical committee, comprising senior engineers of APTransco, to study and finalise the revival of the power purchase agreement, which lapsed in 2004. “It is only a formality now that the project is revived,” sources said. However, APTransco sources say the BPL’s offer is not a big favour to the State government, as it is still higher than the tariff of National Thermal Power Corporation’s power plants at Ramagundam and Visakhapatnam. The NTPC’s 1,000 MW Simhadri power plant supplies power to APTransco at the rate of Rs 1.54 paise per unit. In the recent past, it went up to Rs 1.60 paise because of the high cost of imported coal.

Panchayat Poll: YSR busy with promises again
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 | Pavan

Pre-monsoon showers coupled with the early onset of monsoon are likely to turn the electoral tide in favour of the Congress in the panchayat polls scheduled for next month. With the rain gods on its side, the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee is going to people in the countryside from June 1 to 7 to tell them that even the god turns favourable if the ruler (Chief Minister Y.S. Raja-sekhar Reddy) is good. While, the Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu could not hide his worry on the TD’s panchayat prospects when he told mediapersons that “the Congress government failed to increase agricultural productivity in the last two years though there were good monsoon rains”. Luckily for the Congress government, the summer also passed off without creating any water scarcity in any of the districts. Even the usually scorching Rohini Karthe turned out to be cool affair in the State with several places receiving heavy rainfall bringing down the day temperatures. There were no summer gales that usually cause heavy damage to horticultural crops during May. Thanks to good rains both during 2004 and 2005, there was no depletion of underground water even in areas notified as “grey areas” in hydrogeological parlance.

Junior NTR avoiding publicity
Monday, May 29, 2006 | Pavan

Though NTR is maintaining a low profile and keeping mum about his forthcoming film Ashok, the buzz is that director Surendra Reddy is projecting the young hero in a totally new dimension. It is more than a year since his last film Narasimhudu was released. With this flick proving a dud at the box office, NTR has been very cautious with his moves. He is also avoiding unnecessary publicity about the film which is all set to hit the celluloid in June. Director Surendra is taking great pains in presenting NTR with a ‘new fresh look’. That reminds one of Maheshbabu who is the current rage with his ‘new look’ in Pokiri. Hope this move does wonders to NTR’s career who is looking for a big hit this year.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and senior leader A. Narendra were finally given an audience by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The meeting took place at her residence 10, Janpath, New Delhi.
However, the TRS leaders did not address the media which led to speculations that the Congress chief might not have given a word on Telangana. It could also be because the TRS as well as the Congress have decided not to issue statements on Telangana before Mrs Gandhi takes a decision.
The TRS leaders have been seeking a meeting with Mrs Gandhi for several days now in order to register their annoyance with her over what TRS sources perceive as deliberate delay by the three-member UPA sub-committee headed by Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the TRS demand for the creation of separate Telangana.
According to sources Mrs Gandhi assured the two leaders that she would see that the sub-committee on Telangana submits its report at the earliest.“Mrs Gandhi has responded positively and she sympathises with our cause,” a TRS leader told this newspaper. TRS leaders Mr Vinod Kumar, Mr Ravindra Naik, Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, Prof Jayashanker and Prof Kodanda Ram were part of the delegation which met Mrs Gandhi.

Krishna Godavari basin is new source of gas
Monday, May 15, 2006 | Pavan

Buried under the sea along the country’s coastline is a vast alternative reserve that holds enough methane, the much-hyped natural gas, that can meet the energy needs of the country for “several centuries,” experts in the field have said. The problem now is in mining it.Methane is trapped in a cage of water molecules to form so-called gas hydrates. The ‘fire in ice’ lies in layers about 500 metres under the sea surface, a relatively shallow depth in oil industry terms. Gas hydrates are created by the bacterial decay of organic particles and therefore occur mostly in the continental shelf, the region in the sea closest to the shore.Geophysicists of the city-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and marine biologists of National Institute of Oceanography in Goa in association with Union department of ocean development and the Union ministry of petroleum are exploring and mapping the gas hydrate reserve along the Krishna-Godavari basins and the Arabian Sea.
A preliminary analysis of seismic data by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited along India’s east and west coast deep-water area has revealed about 80,000 square kilometre area having potential hydrate deposits in Andaman-Nicobar, Krishna-Godavari, Konkan and Kutch offshore. ONGC has confirmed about 14,00 sqkm area in Krishna-Godavari deep offshore as potential hydrate province.Gas hydrates are available in the continental shelf region of most countries. The US Geological Services (USGS) in a survey had found that a pair of relatively small areas, each about the size of the US State of Rhode Island, showed intense concentrations of gas hydrates. USGS scientists estimated that these areas contain more than 1,300 trillion cubic feet of methane gas, an amount representing more than 70 times the 1989 gas consumption of the United States.

Andhra could turn out to be another Gulf of Mexico
Saturday, May 13, 2006 | Pavan

With the recent discovery of natural gas in Krishna- Godavari basin in Andhra Pradesh, the region could turn out to be another Gulf of Mexico, said speakers at a CII conference on natural gas at hyderabad.
Addressing a conference on "unravelling the potential of KG basin", the representatives of oil producers, captains of industry and experts called for a better regulatory framework, appropriate pricing, investor friendly environment and development of market demand for gas to unlock this potential.
They said with the recent discoveries, the basin was expected to transform the Indian gas business scenario with many major oil and gas companies aspiring to enter the country's natural gas market.
The conference was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Price Water Coopers. Leading players, including Reliance Industries Ltd, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) Ltd and Gujarat State Petroleum Corp (GSPC), which made the discoveries in the basin, participated in it.
While Reliance gas reserves may be between 12 and 14 trillion cubic feet (TCF), ONGC's gas find is estimated to be one TCF. GSPC last year announced India's largest gas find of over 20 TCF in KG basin. Cairn Energy is reported to have found reserves of 0.75 to one TCF.
While both Reliance and GSPC are planning to lay pipelines from Kakinada and Yanam to Gujarat to meet the huge demand of gas in that state, Andhra Pradesh wants them to first meet the requirements of the state before taking the gas to any other part of the country.

Cold war: Megastar Vs Prakash Raj
Saturday, May 13, 2006 | Pavan

Sources say that the relations have strained between Mega Star and Prakash Raj as the latter produced a film with Uday Kiran. Sources also say that it's the only reason for Prakash Raj's absence in Telugu films. But recently he appeared in both 'Pokiri' and 'Veerabhadra'. Now, the hearsay says that there is a drift between the two producers and Chiranjeevi. Making hype for nothing is everywhere and that's more in film industry. Official sources say that there is no drift between Prakash Raj and Chiranjeevi at all, and that's only a coincidence those support the assumptions.

Education is children right: Shantha sinha
Sunday, May 7, 2006 | Pavan

Magsaysay awardee Shantha Sinha has called upon governments, civil societies and international organisations to make all efforts towards making education a right for children. Participating in a function to mark the release of Global Report of International Labour Organisation, Ms Sinha said unless this happened children would be available for the market and child labour would perpetuate itself.“We must recognise that there is an explosive demand for education among the poor. It is the parents’ faith in education as an indispensable means of attaining freedom towards equity and justice that has propelled them to send their children to schools. Indeed, it is their battle for schools against all odds that has been responsible for the reduction of the numbers of child labour. In telling such parents that ‘we are with you in your struggle for freedom of children and in winning the battle for education’ and that ‘we will join you in your movement for education’ is the need of the hour,” she pointed out.

The film is based on sister sentiment and it’s a blend of action, sentiment and revenge. It’s a different film
