MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi urged the government to protect Urdu medium junior and degree colleges which were facing threat of closure because of lack of students. Raising the issue during zero hour, Mr Owaisi said that a recent government order on student strength had put these colleges in jeopardy.The order stipulated that there should be 30 to 40 students in each class in the arts and science streams. If there are not enough students, the sections would be closed down, he said. Mr Owaisi pointed out that only 20,000 students passed SSC in Urdu medium every year, of which only 10,000 pursued higher education. He requested that certain provisions in the government order be relaxed to allow colleges to continue even if there were only 10 or 12 students.

CPI(M) legislator M.A. Gafoor asked Chief Minister Y.S. AP State Dal Mills and Merchants Associations action committee decided to go on an indefinite strike from March 5 throughout the State demanding the government to stop raids immediately on the traders and release the stocks seized in the last one week.As many as 500 merchants and millers of various districts unanimously passed a resolution to go on strike from March 5 instead of March 1, 2007 as planned earlier. The millers and traders condemned the raids conducted by the vigilance and civil supplies departments on the pretext of illegal hoarding and black marketing of pulses. The seized pulses, worth Rs.100 crores, also led to shortage of pulses in many districts.

The bids for the 4000MW mega power project allotted to the State would be opened on April 10, said energy minister Mohammed Shabber Ali on Saturday. We called tenders for this mega project last week, he said. They will be finalised within nine months and the project would be complete by 2012. The Centre has decided to use imported washed coal in this mega thermal station, he said.We will get 50 per cent of the power from this mega project and that will change the entire power scenario in the State, he said. We are expecting the tariff to be around Rs.2.16 per unit. The minister said that the works of the 1600 MW power project at Krishnapatnam by APGenco would start soon since the problems had been sorted out. The recently commissioned Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station (RTPP) second stage was already generating 110 MW, he added.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is working on a plan to store flood waters of Godavari in the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar lakes to augment water supply to areas in Greater Hyderabad. Both these lakes together have about 7 tmc storage capacity (Osmansagar 3.9 tmc and Himayatsagar 3 tmc). Because of bad inflows from catchment areas, the capacity usually remains unused.Now, experts from the Water and Power Consultancy Services, a Central agency, and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, are attempting to use this capacity to store Godavari waters. WAPCO is the official consultant appointed by the State government to study the feasibility of bringing Godavari water to the city.

The Sabari river that originates in the hilly and tribal jungles of Chhattisgarh will lose 30 kilometres if the State government goes ahead with the Polavaram project across the river Godavari. After entering Andhra Pradesh from Chhattisgarh the Sabari joins the Godavari at Kunavaram in Khammam district. Once the Polavaram project is complete, its backwaters will extend up to the Chhattisgarh border wiping out the 30 km stretch of Sabari in Andhra Pradesh. Polavaram will not only affect the lovely Papi hills in Eastern Ghats, which have unique flora and fauna, but also damage the Sabari river system. APTransco officials are busy knocking at the Centres doors to get additional power to tide over the present power shortage in the State. With the demand for power crossing 172 million units, APTransco chairperson Rachel Chatterji rushed to New Delhi and met Union energy minister Susheel Kumar Shinde and the new energy secretary Anil Rajdan seeking extra power to deal with the Rabi season and the summer season.The gap between demand and supply of electricity has touched a record 12 million units (MU) per day.Our State is facing severe shortage when compared to the other southern States, said Ms Chatterji. Even the Central Electricity Authority report has confirmed that AP accounts for 50 per cent of the total shortage in the southern region.

The State government will take up restoration and conservation of historical Qutub Shahi tombs near Golconda with the support of the Iranian government. The restoration of Premavathi mosque and Badeshahi Ashurkhana will also be taken up with Iranian help, according to a Chief Minister’s Office release.A five-member delegation led by Iranian Consul-General Hossein Ravesh called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy here on Friday and discussed the project.

Cameras will be installed at 10 traffic junctions in Cyberabad police station limits to check traffic violations. The State Cabinet has approved installation of Automated Traffic Red Light and Speed Violation Enforcement System (ATRLSVE) at a cost of Rs 4 crores. The Cabinet has okayed allottment of 260 square yards of land at the rate of Rs 15,000 per square yard to South Central Railway for establishment of computerised reservation counter at Gaddiannaram in Saroornagar mandal.It also approved allottment of five acres of land worth Rs 1 crore per acre in open market at a nominal cost of Rs 5 lakh to Centre of Liver Research and Diagnostic, stem cell therapy at Upparpally village at Rajendernagar mandal. A 50-bed hospital will come up in the research campus. Similarly, 367 additional posts of RTO, MVI, Asst. MVI, Administrative Officers, Sr Assistants and Transport constables in Transport department have been approved. UGC scales for teachers in government medical and dental colleges, hike in the salaries of retired doctors working in various hospitals was also approved by the Cabinet.

A division bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice D. Appa Rao stayed appointment and all further proceedings of Group I services. The bench passed the order in a taken up writ petition arising out of a letter addressed by one Magapu Ravi Kiran, and eight others complaining that reservations were not provided to physically challenged persons in Group I posts under the quota meant for them. The petitioners complained that the government�s notification issued in 2004 for Group I services provided reservations only for six posts for physically challenged persons out of 554 posts. They contended that of these six, three were meant for personnel of fire services. The bench directed that the order copy be circulated to the chief secretary to enable the government to come up with a concrete plan for providing reservation to physically challenged.

Rajya Sabha member M.V. Mysoora Reddys attempt to use the Right to Information Act to get a copy of the governments agreement with Zoorang (India) Limited has come to naught. The senior Telugu Desam leaders request was turned down by the principal secretary (industries), who said that the files were with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy. Disclosing this to mediapersons, the RS member sought a CBI probe into the agreement between the State government and Zoorang for establishing the Odyssey Science City at Anantapur. Zoorang is a real estate company and I wonder how they can build a science city, he said. Expressing doubts about the credentials of Zoorang, Dr Mysoora Reddy said that the company had got 280 acres near Visakhapatnam in the name of developing two township projects.

A scientific study by doctors of the Hyderabad based Care Hospital has found that kidney diseases eased in patients who underwent beating heart bypass surgery. The study was published in the February issue of Cardiothoracic Journal. The paper was accepted by the American Association of Thoracic Surgery for its annual meeting in Philadelphia, the first time in 30 years that it had accepted a scientific paper from India.The study was conducted by Dr Lokeswara Rao Sajja, Dr M. Gopichand and Dr Chakravarthi to evaluate the outcome of bypass surgery on patients with existing kidney diseases. In patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery, the kidney function has an important bearing on the outcome of the operation. Patients having kidney dysfunction underwent either a beating heart bypass surgery or conventional bypass surgery, the doctors reported.

The government will wait for some more time before taking action against Margadarsi Financiers. The Rangachari committee, which has served two notices on Margadarsi Financiers, is believed to have decided to serve another notice asking it to submit all records.According to sources the decision to serve another notice was taken to avoid criticism that the government was acting in haste. Margadarsi Financiers, in its reply to the first letter of the Rangachari committee, had said the matter was being heard by High Court and that the company would not submit records till it was disposed of.
